Jolanta Johnsson’s series of prints, titled “Within Certain Frames”, highlights important human issues by presenting them in the context of frames. Through this unique artistic approach, Jolanta is able to explore complex topics such as social and cultural conventions, power structures, and mental health in an engaging and creative manner.
Frames frame an image and mark its boundaries. Inside the outline of frames is the image. Frames can have different shapes and measurements. Regular shapes such as a rectangle or circles, or undefined geometric figures. The latter were often used by the well-known American artist Frank Stella. The Polish artist Ziemowit Fincek also created many paintings with irregular shapes. The most common form of frame is the rectangle. Here, we can distinguish different types of rectangle frames. A rectangular frame is suitable for framing a rectangular painting canvas. We paint on such most often. My works on paper, and my prints, are also always rectangular. In the series of prints, I want to show important human issues. I show that people live in limited spaces. We encounter limitations in our lives, and this is understandable for us. No sensible person can say that ‘they can do everything’. So we have to accept that. We have to accept the framework that surrounds us. Is this not good news? Not necessarily. We can try to make ourselves comfortable in this framework, to make the picture framed within it beautiful. The image is created during our lives. Every day we add something to it. In a certain frame, nicely designed, it can be a positive slogan. Although sometimes we would like to break out of it.
