Sky zone is pen and ink drawing. It depicts a section of blue clouds against a dark night sky.
Why did I call this rectangle of a drawing a zone? A zone connotes a part of something larger. It is a demarcated area often with a specific purpose. I associate zones with this word with a military purpose. Mostly closed to the common man, fenced off by a high fence. Secrets related to the security of citizens are hidden there. In my hometown, there was a closed military zone. Although people worked there, little was known about the nature of their work. They had to keep the secret.
In my drawing, the limiting factor is the format of the paper. Its edges are a fence restricting and at the same time creating a zone in the endless sky. Separating out a piece of the sky is my way of dealing with the problem: how do you show on a sheet of paper something that has no beginning and no end? Fortunately, there are clouds in the sky. They are the forms that help me arrange the zone of my drawing. I also have to show them in fragments. But they at least have contours that enclose their mass. So they seem finished. This is very helpful in furnishing the infinity of the sky. I use the word – seems – because in the case of the sky, many things are uncertain, and mobile. The wind, the rain, the snow, and the changing light try to make the image of the sky not static. I managed to freeze one moment in a static drawing of the blue sky zone at night when the sky seems black and the clouds reflect the moonlight. Snow specks swirl between the clouds, saturating the space with a diffuse, luminous glow.
