Horizon in rocks, this sight is a common occurrence in Scandinavia, where rocks dominate the landscape. In certain areas, rocks take center stage, becoming the defining feature of the scenery. As a result, the horizon line appears as if it were meticulously etched by the rocks and their ridges. However, this line is far from smooth line common in horizon drawings; it is jagged, adorned with sharp hills and faults, resembling an endless mountain range.
These rocks are no ordinary stones; they are solidified lava, the original building blocks of the Earth’s crust. Initially, they form uniform flows, a spectacle one can witness during the eruption of an active volcano. Over time, they solidify and fracture, paving the way for the forces of nature to leave their mark. The winds, rains, heat, and even the somber atmosphere all collaborate to shape these rocks. Their collective efforts yield a remarkable outcome, grinding away sharp edges and rounding off angles, ultimately giving birth to unique stones. Each stone possesses its own distinct characteristics, coming together to form ranks and processions that shape horizons and coastlines, even those of the grandest great lakes lake. The Scandinavian horizon, in particular, boasts a special allure in my horizon drawing.
Rock drawing ideas come to me nearly every day, as I am living in Sweden in Östergotland, where rocks are present everywhere. Brave plants put down roots between the stones. They cover the raw grey of the granite with the green of their bodies.
