Jolanta Johnsson has created an intricate and beautiful linocut inspired by nature, featuring a tiny hole as the focal point. The print is in black and white and demonstrates Johnsson’s mastery of this difficult but rewarding process. Linocut technique was used by famous artists such as Pablo Picasso.
The tiny hole offers viewers a unique and abstract take on a tree’s structure. With its textured lines and intricate details, the graphics invite closer inspection and brings to life a deeper understanding of the beauty of nature. Does the beauty of nature require understanding? Do we need the knowledge to feel it? Yes and no. When we know more about the laws of nature, then we admire them all the more. Knowledge allows us to see details, structures and cells, and particulars that we would not have paid attention to, or would not have noticed at all. Or conversely, when we know something about the structure and life of a tree, for example, then by observing the tree we seek confirmation of what we know. It is satisfying to find those parts of the tree that we can name, whose structure and function we understand. Man is curious and wants to understand the world around him. Our knowledge from school, half-forgotten and usually very superficial, helps us to admire the beauty of nature. Intriguing places appear. We do not know what they mean, we cannot name them. They are an invitation to wander further into nature. The intriguing tiny hole in the centre of this graphic is a symbol of the unknown. What we have not yet experienced. Let this print inspire the viewer to enter this seemingly empty hole. Perhaps there is something new and exciting hidden behind it.
